In a long-awaited development, Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been released from detention in Benin Republic after a two-year legal battle.
Igboho personally confirmed his release through a statement shared on his Instagram account, along with a video in which he expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his time in custody.
In the video captioned “My Release in Benin Republic,” Igboho began by extending his appreciation to God and his followers, specifically acknowledging the outpouring of love and support he received from Yoruba people worldwide, especially in the wake of his mother’s passing, whose burial he intends to oversee.
He offered special thanks to President Talon of Benin Republic and his cabinet members for their role in his release. Igboho also recognized the unwavering support of prominent figures such as Professor Banji Akintoye and Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, who stood by him throughout his ordeal.
Igboho did not forget to acknowledge the contributions of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and elder statesman Baba Ayo Adebanjo. He emphasized that, ultimately, it is God who grants freedom but expressed deep gratitude for their support.
The activist extended his thanks to religious leaders, including pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshippers, who prayed ceaselessly for his release. He also acknowledged the crucial role played by royal fathers, Obas, and Chiefs in Yoruba land, while emphasizing the need for continued support to liberate Yoruba land from what he referred to as “slavery.”
Igboho concluded his message with expressions of appreciation for specific Obas who have supported him during his detention, highlighting their love and solidarity.
Sunday Igboho’s journey to release began with his arrest on July 19, 2021, at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, by Interpol. He had fled Nigeria following a raid on his Soka residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, by the Department of State Service (DSS), which accused him of arms stockpiling.
His release marks a significant moment for his supporters and raises hope for the future of the Yoruba Nation movement, as Sunday Igboho returns to continue advocating for the rights and aspirations of his people.
